Maybe I'm reading too much into it. But at 5:00 you start hearing the violins and the piece goes from epic to more somber. Like when Schofield begins his sprint the camera's focus is on him while the other soldiers just pass him and its really heroic/epic. Then at 5:00, an artillery shells explodes in front of him, he jumps through the smoke, and the camera pans up to show just the sheer number of men who are charging to their likely demise. That's when the tone of the music changes as well, which to me highlights the sadness in that Schofield arrived just as the attack began and he can only at most save 3/4 of the 1600 men. But nonetheless, he still has to complete his mission per his duty as a soldier and his promise to Blake.
